Every year, more Australian food businesses get asked the same question by a customer, a landlord, or a procurement manager: what actually happens to this packaging once it's used? "Eco-friendly" doesn't answer that question. A certification number does.
Australian packaging regulation is moving in the same direction. Businesses with $5 million or more in annual turnover already carry data reporting obligations under the national packaging framework, state-based single-use plastic bans keep expanding, and further national reform is actively being developed by government and industry working groups. None of that rewards vague marketing language. It rewards businesses that can point to a specific standard and say, plainly, this is what this product is made from and this is what happens to it at end of life.
Smartbag's food packaging collection is built around that principle. Every cup, container, and piece of cutlery in this range carries a traceable certification, not a colour scheme. Here's what's actually behind each claim, so you can pass accurate information on to your own customers with confidence.

Australian Packaging Regulation Is Tightening. Is Your Supply Chain Ready?
For most of the last decade, packaging sustainability in Australia ran largely on voluntary industry commitment. That era is closing. Larger brand owners already have reporting obligations under the National Environment Protection Measure, state governments have progressively banned lightweight single-use plastics, and national environment ministers have confirmed further packaging reform is coming, with the detail of a mandatory framework still being worked through at a government level.
What this means in practice for a café, restaurant, or food retailer is straightforward: the packaging decisions you make today are the ones you may need to defend, in writing, to a customer, an auditor, or a landlord in the next few years. Waiting until a scheme is finalised to start asking your suppliers hard questions about materials and certification is a slower, more expensive way to get to the same place.
Smartbag's approach is to make that conversation easy now, well ahead of any formal requirement, by only using materials with a certification that means something.
No Vague Claims. Just Verified Materials.
Every claim on this page traces back to a specific certification or material fact:
- FSC-certified paperboard and paper. Produced in partnership with BioPak, our paper-based food packaging is sourced from responsibly managed forests with a documented chain of custody from forest to finished product. This is a sourcing certification. It confirms where the fibre came from, not whether the finished item is recyclable or compostable, which is why we also specify those separately below.
- AS4736 industrially compostable. Our bioplastic-lined and plant-fibre products, including cups, cutlery, and containers, are certified to break down in a commercial composting facility. This is not the same as landfill biodegradability, and it is not the same as home compostability. Products certified to this standard need access to industrial composting infrastructure to break down as intended.
- AS5810 home compostable. Available on select items in this range where certified. Not every product here qualifies, so check the individual product listing before telling your own customers something can go in a home compost bin.
- Clear disposal guidance on every product page. We state plainly whether an item needs commercial composting infrastructure, is suitable for home composting, or should go into kerbside recycling, so the disposal instruction you pass on to your customers is accurate rather than assumed.
If a supplier can't answer which of these categories a product falls into, that's usually the first sign of a sustainability claim that won't hold up to scrutiny.
