3 Things to Consider Before Buying Reusable Shopping Bags

Tuesday, June 20, 2017 | Comments (0)

For businesses, offering reusable shopping bags is a great way to show your stewardship of the environment. It also lets you save money that would have otherwise been spent on ordering several batches of single-use plastic bags—reusable shopping bags are reusable, after all.

For ordinary consumers, reusable shopping bags are a way to stop paying for wasteful single-use plastic bags, which, as the name suggests, are practically good for just one use.

Whether you’re a business owner or just an average bloke looking to do right by the environment, using a reusable shopping bag is one of the simplest yet most effective ways to reduce your personal waste output and save money.

Here’s what you should consider before investing in reusable shopping bags.

1.     Use

When buying reusable shopping bags, ask yourself what you need them for. Ordinary consumers typically use these bags for grocery shopping, stashing meats, veggies, canned goods, milk, eggs, bread, and toiletries in their bag.

The key factor behind any good reusable bag is strength. You want your bags to be strong enough to carry the typical shopper’s grocery load. If you can find a bag with pockets for organisation, the better.

But while it’s important for a bag to be strong, you don’t want it to be too beefy that it no longer folds down into a compact bundle for easy storage.

2.     How Many Bags do You Need?

This question is really addressed to business owners.

If you’re in retail, you need to consider the average customer volume of your store. This will be the benchmark for your shopping bag volume.

If you get around 100 shoppers a day, consider getting at least 3,000 reusable bags for one month. Chances are, not all your customers will want a reusable bag at first, so don’t be surprised if initial pickup is slow.

3.     Choose a Type of Reusable Shopping Bag

Reusable shopping bags come in all shapes and sizes. You have:

·      String grocery bags – The most basic reusable shopping bag out there. Highly functional, typically made of cotton, and capable of holding up to 10 kilos of groceries.

·      Wine bags – Made to carry wine bottles, spirits, and the like.

·      Fabric tote bags – These bags are typically made of canvas. Also known as calico bags, come in a wide variety of sizes. Great for multipurpose use outside the grocery store.

·      Jute bags – Jute bags typically come in flashy designs and styles, making them a great fashion accessory for daily use. If you want a bag for school, work, or the gym, jute bags are a great choice.

·      Insulated tote bags – Best for carrying perishable foods and edibles. Ideal for keeping food warm or cold when on the go.

·      Polypropylene bags – Polypropylene bags, also known as eco bags, are made of recyclable plastic materials that can last just as long as a cotton shopping bag. They are cheap to produce and relatively durable.

As you can see, each bag has its target use. If you’re going to use a bag for your groceries, polypropylene bags and string cotton bags are both good choices. If you want a flexible bag that can go anywhere you go, jute and fabric tote bags are great for the job.
